refinishing our white oak floors

When we remodeled the Matlock house in 2016, we installed 3 1/4” white oak #2 throughout. Because 3/4” solid hardwood floors can be refinished, we had the opportunity to change up the space 3 years later by refinishing the floors to achieve a warmer and more natural white oak look. The benefits of 3/4” solid hardwood floors include durability and timelessness, as well as providing the option to refinish when you desire a fresh, updated aesthetic.

After the first cut of sanding, the putty is applied.

Pippa gave us some moral support while we prepped the floor for sanding and finishing.

We took the opportunity to repair a board that had a deep splinter that we couldn’t fix with sanding.

Although no system is completely dustless, we take many steps to ensure that dust is contained during the refinishing process. This includes covering cabinetry with plastic, taping off and using our vacuum system.

This experience gave us a taste of what our clients experience when having to remove all of the furniture and rugs from the rooms to be refinished.

The stair treads got a little attention during this project, as well. Our solid 3/4” white oak hardwood floors gave us the ability to refinish our floors and incorporate a warmer, more natural white oak look.

It was coming together. The custom-made stair rail went back up and we started the final stages of the project.

After buffing, we vacuumed and prepared for sealer and the final coat. In this case, we chose not to use a stain, but preferred the natural white oak look. The beauty of the wood in its natural form was just the way we wanted it .

Taking care of the little details makes all the difference between craftsmanship and a hurried result.

Whew! We made it! This was the look we had in mind. A warmer, more natural white oak look.

Solid hardwood floors can stand up to the test of a busy kitchen and a busy family.
