At the beginning of the year, we touched on hardwood flooring trends for 2021 and herringbone topped our list. I’ve wanted to incorporate a little herringbone into our homes for years and finally included it in our design plan for our current remodel.

Fun fact: Solid hardwood floors in a herringbone pattern have been used in interior design for centuries. The herringbone pattern itself originated in ancient Rome and was used in the design of roads for its durability and stability. It made its way into interiors starting in 1539 in the Chateau de Fontainebleau in France.

Tom made a pattern out of scrap wood to start it off. We have installed it, but will wait to sand and finish it after our dormers are built (less mud and yuck being tracked through then).

Catching a glimpse of what is to come is making us anxious to cross the finish line. But we’re on hold for the moment and will be back (soon? fingers crossed) with Part 2.

We chose 4” select white oak for our herringbone. We knew we wanted it in the foyer and since our house has so many crazy angles, it made sense to also carry it through to the dining room.
