When we bought the Matlock house we knew we wanted to transform the “church room” into a multifunctional bonus space. We tried to make every inch of space functional and take advantage of every nook and cranny for built in storage and use. It wasn’t until we started demo that Tom had the idea of adding a shed dormer and built in beds in the bonus room.
We lovingly called this room the “church room”. With its short pile red carpet and brown paneling, can’t you just see some pews and a song leader standing behind a podium in front of that window?
The first things we did were remove the carpet, paneling and ceiling. We wanted to raise the ceiling in this room as much as we could.
After everything was removed, the new dormer was installed. Tom got right to work building the frame for the built in beds.
After he completed the frame, he added a platform for the mattresses. It is the perfect size for 2 full size mattresses back to back.
After framing a space for the mattresses Tom made a built in drawer under each bed. The drawers are super deep and wide to hold lots of games and nerf guns!
Next he made built in shelves for each bed.
He installed shiplap around the built in drawers, behind the shelves and on the walls and ceilings of the entire room.
He worked all day at other people’s homes and then came over the Matlock house every night to try to get us one day closer to moving in.
getting close, just needs to be painted
all painted
and here they are complete with a tv for each bed, another one of Tom’s ideas ;)
There are actually 3 tvs in this room. One for watching and two for gaming during sleepovers.
What started as a church room ended up as one of our favorite spots in the house.
