5 reasons we love hardwood floors in the kitchen

Sometimes homeowners ask the question, “should I have hardwood floors in the kitchen?” and our answer is a resounding YES, with a few caveats that we’ll go over in this blog post. But, first….why hardwood in the kitchen? Well, here are our top 5 reasons to go for it and install new hardwood floors or refinish existing hardwood in the kitchen:

hardwood floors are pretty

I mean, there’s no doubt about it. Hardwood flooring in a home gives it an elevated feel. An enduring, sophisticated atmosphere is created in a home through furnishings, architectural details, and flooring materials. Think about the most beautiful homes you’ve visited. I bet they had hardwood floors. It only makes sense that they would extend into the kitchen, as well.

hardwood floors in the kitchen create a seamless flow when the same flooring is used throughout the living area

That previous point leads us into a discussion of flow. The flow in a home is important and several factors play into this. One of the most important is flooring. In open concept interior design especially, the goal should always be to have consistent flooring throughout to achieve an ideal sense of flow.

hardwood flooring is a real, organic material which we always gravitate toward

There’s just nothing like real hardwood floors to give a home a sense of time-honored craftsmanship and character. The fact that hardwood floors can be refinished time and again lends to their nature of sustainability and durability. Basically, hardwood floors won’t go out of style. No need to worry that your investment may lose value.

hardwood floors add value to your home

Speaking of value, real estate professionals will always advise to be wise about home improvements and consider projects that will not only improve quality of life, but also add resale value to your home. Hardwood flooring is one of these sound investments, in addition to projects like kitchen and bathroom renovations.

hardwood floors are softer and warmer than alternatives like tile

The cozy-factor in a home is necessary to consider, of course. There’s no way to make a tile floor cozy. Nope, it’s just not going to happen. Envision yourself shuffling into the kitchen in the morning to make coffee. How does it feel to have tile under foot? Yeah, we thought so. You can see why hardwood floors are preferable in a kitchen, especially with a beautiful runner in front of the sink.

Those are the reasons why we recommend either installing hardwood floors (along with other common living areas) or refinishing your existing hardwood floors as opposed to installing tile or other flooring in the kitchen. But this recommendation comes with just a few caveats. Naturally, wood and water don’t mix so you will want to clean up any spills or leaks quickly. Kitchens can be high traffic areas, so consider your lifestyle and willingness to keep your hardwood floors in the kitchen clean and maintained well. We’ve personally used hardwood floors in our kitchens and in the homes of many clients with zero regrets, so we whole-heartedly believe it’s almost always the perfect choice for any homeowner.
