Our client wanted a total transformation of her living room, from dark & heavy to light & bright. So, naturally we decided to refresh this room with paint. It provided such a nice blank canvas for us. The room felt 10x bigger, too! This young family uses this room a lot throughout the day and the goal was to make it a space where they could relax and recharge. One of the pieces we brought in was an art ledge that Tom designed and built. It would serve to ground the main wall and provide a focal point of art and interesting textures.
The main wall before. Removing that heavy cabinet and replacing it with a minimal and modern sofa would lighten the room right up. Adding the art ledge above would bring visual interest and help to fill the large blank wall.
A wider view of the main wall. This room is truly the heart of the home. We were so excited to help our clients transform it into a beautiful, relaxing space.
We’re showing you the opposite wall here, so you can get a sense for the whole space. It opens up into their kitchen and dining area. One of our goals was to make the entire living area more cohesive.
Since the wall with the tv cabinet would become a wall with a couch and art ledge, we would be able to face all the seating toward the fireplace.
With brighter and lighter walls and furniture, this room would be a breath of fresh air for this busy family.
And now with our white paint, new furniture and new lighting, this room was really taking shape. Now to tackle that large, blank wall.
The opposite side of the room is coming along, too.

We love that cane cabinet and how it is just the right size for that space. The art above adds such a personal touch.

And now the the art ledge and art finish off this space and pull the design together.

We brought in more lighting and fun, textured pillows to complete the transformation.

We attached the art to the wall (did we mention this is a busy household and sometimes little people get rowdy?). Better safe than sorry!

What do you think of our solution to that large, blank canvas of a wall? The art ledge is so perfect, too, because the art can be changed out as tastes or seasons change. Have you ever had a large, challenging space to incorporate into a design? How did you use it?
